This week’s Friday Flash has some brand new items and also our weekly updates and reminders.
1. PASTOR’S LUNCH – SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 12th. Pastor John and Sandra will host a Pastor’s lunch next Sunday, the 12th of February, from 12:30 to 2:30 PM in the church Fellowship Hall, directly following the morning worship services. Several times a year we invite those who wish to learn more about the church and church membership to attend this get-acquainted lunch. Attendance carries no obligation to become a member of the church. It’s a time to become acquainted with the APC and its ministries, to meet the pastor and members of the church council, and also to discuss our church family and our vision for the church in Bonn. In order to plan the lunch properly, we need to know how many people will attend; therefore, please confirm with Pastor John or the church office if you wish to participate.
2. PASTOR’S LENTEN STUDY. Pastor John will be leading a study for seven weeks beginning on Ash Wednesday, February 22nd. The group will be limited to 10 people and will be hosted at Pastor John and Sandra's apartment. During these 7 Wednesday evenings, we will explore the significance of the cross, using the Bible and theological reflection from throughout church history. The studies will begin at 7:30 and finish at 9:30. There will be no materials to purchase for the study itself, but there will be recommendations throughout the study if you would like to continue reading on your own. 3. JEWELRY FOUND. Last week, we found two pieces of jewelry in our church. If you lost something last Sunday, please check in with the church office to see if what we found belongs to you.
4. GARAGE SALE FOR KENYA MISSION TRIP! Our APC Secretary, Margot, will be moving to a smaller apartment this spring, so furniture items and other assorted goodies must go! Therefore on Saturday, February 18th, and Sunday, February 19th, in the afternoons between 3:00-6:00 PM, Margot will host an open house for anyone interested in used household items – most in excellent-good condition. All proceeds will go to the APC Youth Mission Trip. Please put the above dates on your calendar and plan to stop by Chez Margot, Denglerstr. 68, here in Bad Godesberg.
5. YOUTH NEWS. Youth Groups are running on regular schedule. Monday nights from 7:00 – 9:00 PM for students aged 14 - 18, Tuesday nights from 6:30-8:30 PM for students aged 11 - 14. D.I.G.G. is Wednesday afternoons from 3:45 - 5:15 for older students.
There will be no Youth events during the week of February 19th – 25th due to Karneval holidays.
Thanks to all for prayers concerning the Youth Ski Retreat! We had good travels, fresh snow, and a wonderful time with each other.
Please pray that our youth would know the blessedness granted by God to those who are willing to confess sins and seek forgiveness in and through Jesus (Psalm 32).
6. KELLY'S KORNER. Quiz Night – next Friday, February 10th from 7:00 – 10:00 PM. Bring a team (3 – 5 people) of “brainiacs” with you to win. Childcare provided. 10 € per person entry donation covers light meal - with extra food and drink available for purchase. Bring your friends, neighbors, home groups and colleagues to have fun while supporting the Kenya Trip.
On March 4th and 11th, we will host a Silent Auction to raise funds for the Kenya Trip. In the past, people from the APC and the Bonn community have donated goods or services to be auctioned off. Some sellers have been American food, artwork, music lessons, language lessons, household appliances in great condition, tickets to events, handmade crafts, and more. If you or anyone you know can help, please consider donating an item to the auction to assist the Kenya Trip participants.
Fundraising for the Kenya Trip is off to a good start. 4.000 € has already been donated, leaving us with only 14,000 € to raise. Please continue to pray for God's provision for this service trip.
7. CHILDREN’S CHURCH. PARENTS PLEASE NOTE that Children’s Church will only be available at the 11:15 service.
8. MEN'S BREAKFAST. Awake, oh men! It's time for the next men's breakfast! The event will take place next Saturday, February 11th, at 8:00 AM at the church. Enjoy a great meal, a life-changing spiritual impulse and the opportunity to network with other men. Iosif Igna will provide some challenging input on the topic "Spiritual Disciplines - Door to Liberation" from Richard Foster’s book “Celebration of Discipline”. Please don't forget to bring your friends.
9. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP (IWCF). This group meets every Tuesday morning from 9:30 AM to 12:00 in the Fellowship Hall of the church. The topic next Tuesday, February 7th will be: “Christian Character – Luke 14:25-35”. Newcomers are always welcome to attend. If you have questions, please contact Birgit Gray at 0228-3862745.
10. FREE TRIPLE P PARENTING SEMINARS TO COME. Starting February 15th, we are going to offer free Triple P Parenting Seminars held by Early Intervention Clinical Specialist Leigh Dix. The seminar will take place at our Fellowship Hall on the third Wednesday of the months February, March and May (that is February 15th, March 21st and May 16th), from 10:00 – 11:30 AM. 11. ANOTHER GARAGE SALE FOR KENYA MISSION TRIP! 12. PLAYGROUP WITH A PURPOSE. Every Wednesday from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, we meet in the Nursery Room. The purpose of this group is to help preserve the sanity of mothers of young children by encouraging spiritual growth based on biblical principles. Mothers share some coffee and discuss biblical topics related to motherhood while small children play at their feet. This coming Sunday, February 5th, Pastor John will continue his series on “Spiritual Disciplines”, and the title of his sermon is “Fasting”. The Scripture Lesson is Matthew 6:16-21. 1. BENEFIT CONCERT FOR STIMSON MEMORIAL CHAPEL. Come and enjoy good music while supporting our church building at the same time! Join us tomorrow, Saturday, January 28th, at 7:30 PM for an evening of jazz, soul, singer and songwriter and international songs by Anke Held and her band from Switzerland. This is the unique opportunity to hear the songs from a new CD release right before it’s start! Admission is free, donations welcome.
2. CONGREGATIONAL MEETING. Our Congregational Meeting last Sunday was very well attended, and the 2012 budget, most ably presented by our church treasurer, Mark Fenstermann, was unanimously approved. Another item on the agenda was the extension of John Marlowe’s contract for one more year, through June 2013. John has also been tapped as Children’s Ministry Coordinator. An appropriate raise in salary was also unanimously approved.

This is an opportunity for us to support each other in prayer and to bring before God the major activities in the life of the church for the coming month. Please join us. Everyone is welcome!

7. BOOK & DVD SALE THIS COMING SUNDAY. Our monthly book sale takes place this Sunday during our coffee hours (YES – there will be two of them!) in support of our APC Mission Projects. You will find a table set up with a large variety of used English books and DVDs for children and adults at attractive prices. 100% of the proceeds goes towards supporting our worldwide missions. We thank you for your support, but ask you please to STOP donating books or DVDs for the time being. 8. CHILDREN’S CHURCH. PARENTS PLEASE NOTE that Children’s Church will only be available at the 11:15 service. The topic for this coming Sunday is: Bezalel and Oholiab. The children will learn that God gave us talents and He wants us to serve Him and others.

Yesterday, the youth of the APC boarded a bus and headed down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen for the 2012 Ski Retreat. Kelly reported this morning that they arrived at 10:30 PM last night but by 8:00 AM were already getting their equipment for a day on the slopes. Please keep them and their leaders in your prayers. They will return to APC on Sunday afternoon.
10. KELLY'S KORNER. Quiz Night on Friday, February 10th, from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Mark your calendars. Let us aim, as a church family, to pull in 100+ people from our community for this event. Next weekend, many of the youth will travel to Garmisch-Partenkirchen for the 2012 Ski Retreat. Keep them in your prayers as they ski the slopes, fellowship, have fun, and learn more about Jesus.
Please be praying that our youth would be bold in calling upon God because He hears us (Psalm 17.6).
7. KELLY'S KORNER. Thanks for the many prayers for the 30+ Hour Famine for the Kenya Trippers. We enjoyed a tasty Kenyan meal provided by some of our gracious church members on Sunday afternoon. We don't have final numbers, but at least 1000 Euros has been pledged through the Famine fundraising! That is great news. Thank You.

This coming Sunday, January 22nd, our one 10:30 AM service will be led by Pastor John. Pastor Kelly will be preaching and the title of his sermon is “Spiritual Disciplines: Living Out Loud”. The Scripture passage is Mark 2:13-17. The Praise Band will lead the music at this Contemporary Service. In addition, there will be a special musical treat during this service. Oliver Schwichtenberg, an 11 year old student at the Bonn Music School, will join us to play during the Offertory. Oli plays the bassoon (Fagott) and is in Class 6C at the Clara-Fey-Gymnasium here in Bad Godesberg. 7. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP (IWCF). This group has been taking a break over the holidays and will resume its meetings next Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 with a Bible quiz. Newcomers are always welcome to attend. If you have questions, please contact Birgit Gray at 0228-3862745.
8. THIRD THURSDAY PRAYER MEETING. Next Thursday, January 19th, at 7:00 PM, we will meet in the Prayer Chapel for an hour of prayer. 9. MEN'S BREAKFAST. Awake, oh men! It's time for the next men's breakfast! The event will take place on Saturday, January 21st, at 8:00 AM at the church. “Celebration of Discipline”.
10. ALTAR FLOWERS CHART. There is a new Flower Chart in the APC Office for all the Sundays in 2012. As of this moment there are 37 open dates for you to select a special Sunday to donate Altar flowers. The cost of an arrangement is Euro 15.50. Just put your name on the chart and fill in one of the forms (in the brown envelope below the chart) with your name and message, and return it to Margot or Ina in the office a week prior to the date of your donation.
11. PLAYGROUP WITH A PURPOSE. Every Wednesday from 9:30 AM to 11:30, we meet in the Nursery Room. Mothers share some coffee and discuss biblical topics related to motherhood while small children play at their feet. Next week most of our church programs will be back in full swing, so we hope that this first edition of our 2012 Friday Flash will help to keep you up-to-date. Please note that we return to 2 services this coming Sunday, 9:30 Traditional and 11:15 Contemporary.
1. A NOTE FROM PASTOR JOHN: May 2012 be a year of great growth in Christ for each of us! I pray as Paul prayed for the Christians at Colosse, that God would fill us with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that we may live lives worthy of the Lord, pleasing him in every way and bearing fruit in many good works (Colossians 1:9-10). Beginning this Sunday, January 8th, a new sermon series will examine a variety of methods which have been helpful to Christians throughout the ages to grow in maturity as disciples of Christ. 2. UN-DECK THE HALLS - TOMORROW MORNING, Saturday, January 7th., at 10:00 AM. Sadly, the holidays are over and the city begins picking up the old trees next Thursday. This means it is time to take down our Christmas trees and decorations. The trees must go out on the street, and the lights and ornaments must be packed away for the next eleven months. We need help! We will start at 10:00 AM, and if we have enough volunteers we should be finished by noon – or not later than 1:00 PM. Please help if you can!
3. CHILDREN’S CHURCH. PARENTS PLEASE NOTE: We return to our normal two Sunday Services this coming Sunday, January 8th, but please note that Children’s Church will only be available at the 11:15 service.
4. YOUTH NEWS. Regular Youth Groups start up this week. Monday, January 9th, from 19.00-21.00 and Tuesday, January 10th, from 18.30-20.30. The Monday night group is for ages 14-18 and will be looking at Hard Questions in Life and Faith while the Tuesday night group is for ages 11-14 and will continue looking at the Big Picture of the Bible. All are welcome!
Kenya Trippers will be participating in 30 hour Fast next weekend, Jan 13-15. Part of their time will be spent doing regular life and the other part will be learning more about the poverty that many in our world experience on a daily basis. We are hoping not only to raise awareness but also funds for the Kenya trip. One way you can help is by donating funds to the trip or to individual students that would equal the money you might spend over a 30 hour period. Talk to Kelly for more info.
Please be praying that our youth would not walk in the way of sinners but rather delight in the Word of God (Psalm 1).
5. KELLY'S KORNER. Thanks to those who helped out this week with finishing the Basement Renovation project. The ceiling has been painted; the window boxes have been painted, and various smaller details have been taken care of. A special thanks to the Boy Scout Troop here in Bonn who sent numerous youth to help out during the week! As you all know, the only way to keep the place looking nice is if we all take part in being gentle with the furniture, not banging tables or chairs against the walls, tossing out garbage when we see it, and all the while helping others to take care as well.
Save the Date - Friday, February 10th. The Kenya Service Trip Team will host a Quiz Night to raise funds. We promise to provide good food, good fellowship, and great fun.
6. CONGREGATIONAL MEETING. On Sunday, January 22nd, there will be one Worship Service only at 10:30 AM, and our Congregational Meeting to vote on the proposed APC Consolidated Budget is scheduled to follow immediately at 12:00. We will meet downstairs in the Fellowship Hall, where coffee and goodies will be available. You will find the agenda as an attachment to this newsletter as well as an insert in Sunday’s church bulletin. Everyone is welcome to attend, but only members of the APC will be eligible to vote.

With today’s Friday Flash, we hope to remind you about our worship services this coming weekend, and also to wish each of you a blessed Christmas.
1. HOLIDAY SERVICES:
Saturday, December 24th – Christmas Eve:
5:00 PM – Family Candlelight Service. This early worship service is designed with children in mind, and will include Christmas music, a children’s message and lots of candles.
11:00 PM – Candlelight Carol Service. The late service will be traditional with many carols and candles. It will include lighting of the Christ candle, Scripture readings, and will culminate with Silent Night and the beauty of candlelit faces in the Sanctuary.
Sunday, December 25TH – Christmas Day:
10:30 AM – One service only – a Traditional Service with Hans-Peter at the organ and the APC Choir leading the music.
December 31st – New Year’s Eve:
7:00 PM – A Prayer Service. This one hour service will include giving thanks to God for his blessings in 2011 and recommitting ourselves to Him anew in 2012.
Sunday, January 1st – New Year’s Day:
10:30 AM – One service only – a Traditional Service with carols and Hans-Peter at the organ.

2. CHILDREN’S CHURCH. PARENTS PLEASE NOTE: There will be NO Children's Church at any of the holiday services, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, December 25th, New Year's Eve and New Year’s Day, January 1st. Children’s Church will resume on Sunday, January 8th.
3. 2012 PLEDGE CARDS. Thank you to all who have already given their pledge cards for the coming year. If you have not yet completed a card and you plan to make a pledge for the year OR even if you are simply planning to continue your giving at the same level, please complete a pledge card to help us plan our budget for 2012. We are very thankful for your generous giving in 2011- it has been a good year. In 2012 there will be several increases to the budget and your gifts are what makes it possible for us to continue the work of God's Kingdom here in Bonn.
4. 20-CENT PROJECT BOXES – MISSIONS PROGRAM. Our 20 cent box giving to missions has been a great success this year. Thank you to all for your generous gifts and for your many creative ways of filling these boxes. So far, we have collected over 2,000 Euros in these boxes. It is amazing how much of a difference these coins can make! You can still bring in your boxes and you are welcome to take a new one and begin collecting again for our missions work around the world.
5. YOUTH NEWS. Regular Youth Meetings are on holiday until the 9th of January, 2012. Enjoy your time with friends and family.
Aqualand anyone? Let's train to Cologne on the 6th of January for some indoor swimming and sliding fun. Plan on leaving Bad Godesberg around 10:00and returning around 16:00. More details to come.
Be praying that our youth would see Jesus as he truly is over this Christmas holiday, the Light of the World who Gives Life to All (John 1.1-18).
6. KELLY'S KORNER. Some of the Kenya Trippers will be participating in a 30-hour famine over the weekend of January 13th – 15th, 2012. The purpose is two-fold. The first purpose is to join those who don't have food by fasting along with them to experience their reality. The second purpose is to raise funds by asking others to support the fast by donating money to these fasters. I am suggesting that people donate funds that would be comparable to a normal 30 hours of regular eating. Let us join in the life experience of the less fortunate together.
During the week of January 2nd – 6th, 2012, Kelly will be working on the basement during the afternoons and evenings to tie up loose ends. Your help would be greatly appreciated. There is sanding, painting, floor cleaning and odd jobs to help out with. Contact Kelly if you can help.
